Philip B. CardiPhil Cardi

Phil is a Managing Member of Cardi, Schulte & Ford, LLC. His practice emphasizes civil trial work, including defense of architects and engineers, construction litigation including mechanic’s liens, and commercial litigation. In addition, Phil advises clients in the drafting and negotiation of construction and other contracts. Phil has tried numerous cases to the bench, to juries, to arbitrators, and has also served as an arbitrator in construction cases.

In 2005, Phil received the President’s Award from both AIA-Colorado and also from ACEC-Colorado for his role as amicus counsel for those organizations in BRW, Inc. v. Dufficy and Sons, Inc., 99 P.3d 66 (Colo. 2004). In BRW, the Colorado Supreme Court applied the Economic Loss Rule to hold that design professionals generally are not responsible for lost profits, schedule disruption, and other financial losses of construction contractors.

Phil has presented numerous seminars and programs to design professionals, contractors, public works officials, and attorneys on the subject of construction law and was the original author of “The Fundamentals of Construction Litigation,” a chapter in West Publishing’s Colorado Methods of Practice. He is also a Professional Affiliate of the American Institute of Architects, Colorado Chapter, and a member of the Colorado Association of Geotechnical Engineers.

Phil attended the University of Colorado in Boulder, receiving his journalism degree from the University in 1976, his Juris Doctor in 1981, and was admitted to the Colorado Bar that same year.

Phil is a Member of the Colorado and Arapahoe County Bar Associations, and is a past president (1992-1993) of the Colorado Defense Lawyers Association.

Phil lives with his wife Martha in the Town of Columbine Valley, and spends his free time working on his golf game at Columbine Country Club. Phil has served in town government, and has been a board member of Columbine. Phil and Marti have two children in college and look forward to the day that tuition bills are a thing of the past.
